President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon received today the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan Nicholas Haysom.
The meeting discussed issues of cooperation of Tajikistan with this influential global organization.
At the beginning of the conversation the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon said: "I am convinced that together we can contribute to peace, stability and progress in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan."
Haysom, in his turn, expressing support for the firm position of Tajikistan to address the political situation in Afghanistan, praised the role and contribution of Tajikistan in ensuring peace and stability in Afghanistan and Central Asia, as well as in the promotion of international peacekeeping forces. In addition, N. Haysom on behalf of the United Nations expressed his gratitude to the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon for the constructive efforts.
Also among the important topics of the meeting of Emomali Rahmon and Nicholas Haysom were issues related to supporting the development of socio-economic areas of Afghanistan. Emomali Rahmon said that "the international community should increase its financial, material and technical assistance to Afghanistan, especially for the revival of its economy, its social development and job creation."
Referring to the implementation of the CASA-1000 project to supply electricity from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to Afghanistan and Pakistan, the construction of the railway Tajikistan-Afghanistan-Turkmenistan and active trade and transit cooperation with Afghanistan, it was stressed that Tajikistan in cooperation with foreign partners is actively supporting socio-economic development of the neighboring state. In addition, it was recalled with satisfaction about the effective communication of power structures of Tajikistan and Afghanistan in the fight against terrorism, extremism, as well as the training of Afghan military personnel in Tajikistan.
The sides held a constructive conversation on other topical regional and international issues, including the fight against terrorism, extremism and illegal drug trafficking, as well as measures aimed at preventing threats and challenges of the modern world.
