Meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) Shamshad Akhtar

Today, the Founder of Peace and National Unity – Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan H.E. Mr. Emomali Rahmon received the UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) Dr. Shamshad Akhtar.

The socio-economic cooperation between Tajikistan and the UN were discussed during the meeting.

"Tajikistan is actively and consistently continuing the fruitful cooperation with all relevant United Nations agencies, especially the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific", - said the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon during the meeting.

Leader of the Nation, Emomali Rahmon appreciated ESCAP’s support for implementation of a number of socio - economic development projects in Tajikistan.

A constructive conversation took place on the summing up the Dushanbe Conference on the implementation of the International Decade for Action "Water for Life" 2005-2015, and another initiative of Tajikistan to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, as well as the 10th United Nations Special Programme for the Central Asia economies Council meeting in Dushanbe, finding the ways to solve problems of Central Asian countries and landlocked states.

The parties stressed the importance of modernization of roads and railways, the development of the agricultural sector and rural areas, the economy and trade, investment, job creation, the construction of transmission lines, gas pipelines, the implementation of regional hydropower projects, including CASA-1000 with use of rich water resources of Tajikistan for further socio-economic development of Central and South Asia.

The sides also discussed other issues of mutual interest.
